“Reinventing Yourself?” Maybe not.

This is an interesting article, again from The Huffington Post.  This one is about the idea that when you are old you have option of “reinventing” yourself.  I would argue that there is no such thing as “reinventing” oneself.  I think that throughout life we just change and adapt to our life situations.  The will to adapt to our life situations changes in intensity as we get older, and comes in cyclical spurts.  In other words, we cycle between wanting stability in our lives and wanting change.

One of the things I see in my older clients is a misperception that they cannot change after an unspecified age.  I disagree.  The desire to change is what is key, and it is ok to not have strong desire to change.  however, the ability to change is still there.  So, if you are 80 years old and want to take up a new hobby to feel fulfilled, go for it!  You can set the pace at which you learn it.  Of course, you may want to think long and hard about bungee jumping or other dangerous hobbies, as well as check with a doctor, but if you have the will and want to do it, go for it!

Elderly fight depression with social networking on the Internet.

Study looks at social networking use of computers for the elderly.

Personally, I think that this is a great idea.  The cost of computers is really coming down and not ALL the elderly are computer-phobic.  I think, though, there will still be access problems for those who are on a fixed income.  Hmmm.  Facebook vs. food.  LiveJournal vs. medications.  Hopefully some day we will be able to better provide for our elderly.
